Homer Simpson works as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear PowerPlant in Sector 7G. He spends much of his time dozing and eating doughnuts, but his job is repeatedly saved by fortuitous circumstances, often having to do with his boss, plant owner Charles Montgomery Burns, being unable to remember who Homer is. In the episode 'Homer's Enemy', Frank Grimes points out the fact that meltdowns have tripled every year since Homer became safety inspector, but this is dismissed by colleagues who like Homer enough to want to keep him around. Indeed, Homer was only hired after marching into Burns's office and telling him Homer would be the perfect spineless employee. Impressed with Homer's lack of will, Burns immediately hired him, declaring "I haven't been this impressed since I first laid eyes on a young bootlick named Waylon Smithers.
